Before, the Portuguese judo began by beating Batyr Hojamuhammedov of Turkmenistan and Austrian Aaron Fara and then yielding to the Canadian Shady ElNahas in three fights decided by ippon.
Relegated to the recaps, Jorge Fonseca overcame the Dutchman Michael Korrel, also by ippon, before the triumph over Buzacarini that gave him the bronze.
In women, the two Portuguese judokas who participated in the final day of the tournament, in the category of -78kg, were removed soon after the first match, against two Japanese.
Yahima Ramirez gave in to Mami Umeki, for ippon, and Patrícia Sampaio before Ruika Sato, also for ippon. The two Japanese would reach the final, with Sato hitting Umeki.
In the first days, among the Portuguese judokas, Anri Egutidze, who was fifth in the category of -81kg, and Maria Siderot, seventh in -48kg.
