Jorge Fonseca guarantees first medal for Portugal
Jorge Fonseca secured the first medal for Portugal at the Tokyo Olympic Games, by winning bronze in the -100 kg category of the judo tournament.
In the match that determined third place, the Portuguese judoka beat Canadian Shady Elnahas, by waza-ari, in a close match that Jorge Fonseca managed in the final moments, on the verge of being disqualified for penalties.
On the way to bronze, Jorge Fonseca defeated the Belgian Toma Nikiforov and the Russian Niiaz Iliasov, but ended up being defeated by the Korean Guham Cho in the match that gave access to the final.
This is the third Olympic medal for national judo after the bronzes won by Nuno Delgado and Telma Monteiro in the Sydney Games, in 2000, and Telma Monteiro in Rio de Janeiro, in 2016.
