Portuguese judoka defeated Niyaz Ilyasov and won gold in the -100 kg category.

Jorge Fonseca became, this Friday, world champion of judo in the category of -100 kg. For the first time, a Portuguese athlete wins the gold medal.

The 26-year-old judoka, who had left Elmar Gasimov behind in the previous round, beat Russian Niyaz Ilyasov in the final of the tournament in Tokyo, Japan.

The Sporting athlete, it is recalled, also eliminated Thomas Briceno, Avtar Singh and Benjamin Fletcher on their way to the gold medal.

This was, by the way, the second medal won by Portugal in the World Judo, after Barbara Timo took the silver in the category of -70 kg.
