Jorge Fonseca wins bronze in the Hungarian Judo Grand Slam

Portuguese judoka Jorge Fonseca won today the bronze medal in the category -100 kg in the Grand Slam of Hungary, on a day marked by the injury of Patrícia Sampaio, in the tournament of -78 kg.

Jorge Fonseca, world champion, entered the competition in the second round, imposing himself on the Dutchman Simeon Catharina, by ‘wazari’, adding two wins by ‘ippon’, against the French Cedric Olivar, and the Hungarian Miklos Cirjenics.

In the semi-final, Jorge Fonseca lost by ‘ippon’ to Russian Arman Adamian, defeating the French Alexandre Iddir in the bronze medal match, by achieving an ‘ippon’ in the ‘gold point’ period.

In the +78 kg category, Rochele Nunes eliminated the Hungarian Mercedesz Szigetvari, due to the accumulation of ‘shidos’, in the inaugural match, losing afterwards, by ‘ippon’, with the Turkish Kayra Seyit.

In the repechage, the Portuguese scored for ‘ippon’ over Serbian Milica Zabic, but in the fight for bronze, she gave in, for ‘wazari’, in a period of ‘gold point’, against Brazilian Maria Suelen Altheman.

Vasco Rompão was removed in the first round in the +100 kg tournament by the Dutchman Jur Spijkers, and Patrícia Sampaio (-78 kg) abandoned the fight against the Dutchwoman Natasha Aushma, due to a fracture with a dislocation in her right leg.

The judoka, national champion of -78 kg and in an eligible place for the Tokyo Olympic Games (11th in the ‘ranking’), was not in combat for more than a few seconds, after an attack by Aushma, in which the leg it seemed to get stuck in an opposite movement.
