The sailors Jorge Lima and José Costa today qualified Portugal for the 2020 Olympic Games in the 49er, by ensuring the presence in the Medal Race of the World Class Olympic Games, held in Aarhus, Denmark.
After the deadline for the protests and after the publication of today’s results, Jorge Lima and José Costa learned that they are still in the race for the medals, which in itself guarantees Portugal a place in Tokyo2020 – almost half of the places are now assigned.
After dropping to 18th on the day before, Lima and Costa surpassed themselves, with extreme conditions of wind and waves, and went up to eighth place, after an eighth and a fourth in today’s races.
In the ‘Medal Race’ on Saturday will be the top 10, so the Portuguese crew may still climb the final classification.
The other Portuguese who evolved in Aarhus – where they accounted for 40% of the seats for the Olympic Games – had less good performances.
Diogo Costa and Pedro Costa finished today in 36th place overall the races held in 470 men and 470 women Mafalda Pires de Lima and Mariana Lobato were in 42nd.
In Laser Radial, Carolina João was 72nd, while Eduardo Marques finished 68th in the Laser. Further behind, Santiago Sampaio closed in 104th and Tomás Pires de Lima in 133rd.
