The renowned wine producer and the «ambassador» of Portuguese cuisine have teamed up to create two new wines that offer a sensory journey through the stunning Douro region: Avillez/Niepoort Tinto 2017 and Avillez/Niepoort Branco 2017.
«For me, it is very interesting to be able to develop signed Douro wines. Wines and gastronomy have a very close relationship, they value each other and I really appreciate the Douro products. The new wines were thought out and developed in partnership with Dirk Niepoort, a producer with great value, tradition and experience in the region and I am very happy with the final result.” – José Avillez
Avillez/Niepoort Red 2017
A very gastronomic wine
It comes from 50-year-old vines near Quinta de Napoli. It mixes typical Douro grape varieties, with an emphasis on Touriga Franca, Tinta Amarela and Tinta Roriz.
It presents an open ruby color, with a more closed heart; on the nose it is quite shy, unfolding over time, showing aromas of red fruit and some forest fruit, combined with notes of aging in wood. In the mouth it is light and fresh.
With great aging potential, it is a wine with medium depth, very gastronomic. It goes well with spicy dishes, red meat, game, grilled meat, fatty fish and vegetarian dishes with mushrooms.
Avillez/Niepoort White 2017
A fresh wine with a huge aging potential
It is a wine that expresses the vine and the place of origin: vines that are located at about 600 meters of altitude, in mica schist soils, aged over 80 years and mostly located on the right bank of the Douro river.
With a very intense and deep mineral aspect, it is very complex in aroma, with excellent notes of toast from the barrel and fine herbs perfectly integrated into the citrus and slightly floral profile. With a lot of presence in the mouth, it is very fine and delicate in the notes of white fruit and some spices.
A white to be enjoyed in a Burgundy-style glass that goes well with roasted fish, white meat, cream-based dishes, gratins and risottos.
The new wines are available for consumption at José Avillez’s restaurants. They can also be purchased in these spaces and in the online Take-Away stores of Bairro do Avillez and Cantinho do Avillez.
