José Gonzalez and Mayra Andrade confirmed at the Festival Jardins do Marquês – Oeiras Valley
June 28 to July 9, 2025 in the Marquês Gardens, Oeiras
The musical agenda for 2025 already begins with an unmissable highlight: the return of the Jardins do Marquês – Oeiras Valley Festival. After the announcement of Cat Power Sings Dylan’66, Gisela João, Mario Biondi, Herman & Quarteto, Paralamas do Sucesso and Detonautas, the program reserves another truly special night.
On June 30th, the main stage of the Festival will be taken by two internationally renowned artists who promise to transport the audience on a musical journey full of emotion and authenticity: José Gonzalez, master of intimate folk and the surrounding melodies, and Mayra Andrade, with her captivating voice and unique mix of traditional and contemporary sounds.
José González is one of the most celebrated artists in contemporary music, known for a style that combines his delicate fingerings on the Spanish classical guitar with hypnotic melodies and deeply reflective lyrics. Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, the son of Argentine parents, José brings to his music influences ranging from traditional folk to Latin music, creating a minimalist and emotional sound capable of moving a legion of dedicated fans. With more than two decades of career, José has already reached billions of streams, platinum records in the UK and Sweden, as well as gold in Australia and New Zealand.
In addition to these milestones and numbers, he has also performed on stages such as the Royal Albert Hall in London, and had his songs included in such memorable soundtracks as “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and “The Last Dance”. Records like “Veneer” (2003), “In Our Nature” (2007) and “Vestiges & Claws” (2015) show all their quality. The latest, “Local Valley” (2021), reflects all of his artistic and personal maturity, exploring more philosophical themes, and giving music to our search for meaning in the middle of the universe.
For the first time, José González sings in English, Spanish and Swedish, connecting even more with his roots and expanding the reach of the messages he wants to convey. Themes like “El Invento” and “Visions” combine an existential lyricism with an intimate sonority. On the other hand songs like “Swing” and “Tjomme” reveal how the musician does not live aloof from reality, looking critically at the most social and cultural issues. José González is today one of those few artists able to entertain, emote and make think in equal measure, and seems to match perfectly with the Jardins do Marquês – Oeiras Valley, where the musician performs on June 30th.
Mayra Andrade is not only a treasure of Cape Verdean music, it is also a treasure of the world’s music, an example of artistic expression that makes what is local the subject of its projection. Mayra was born in Cuba but grew up in Senegal, Angola, Germany and of course Cape Verde, and this may help to explain the fact that we find several songs within the singer’s music.
And only this way can you truly understand the history of Mayra, from this world where everything is made close: in 2001 he won the Games of the Francophonie in Ottawa, Canada, with a song in creole-Verdean, in 2002 he began to perform at Praia and Mindelo in Cape Verde, in 2004 acts in one of the most famous bars of world music, Satellit Café, in Paris, in 2016 moves to Portugal and, over these years, collaborates with names of music from all over the world: Cesária Évora, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Charles Aznavour, Mariza, Pedro Moutinho, among many others.
And this embrace of the world is also evident when we listen to his albums, from the debut “Navega” to “Manga”, released in 2019. After five albums, Mayra Andrade chose to return to the essence of her creative process, the most intimate. In “reEncanTO”, accompanied by the guitarist Djodje Almeida, the singer and composer revisits her repertoire in the simplest terms: only voice and guitar, the basis of Cape Verdean music. Thus, “reEncanto” consecrates the symbiosis of a duo for a real experience with its audience, in a moment of sharing and great emotion. The singer performs on June 30th, at Jardins do Marquês – Oeiras Valley.
