José Paulo Lopes, who on Friday obtained minimums for the Tokyo2020 Olympic Games, postponed to this year due to the covid-19 pandemic, swam the distance in 7.52.68 minutes, being 10.07 seconds from the winner, the Ukrainian Mykhaylo Romanchuk (7.42.61).
Italians Gregorio Paltrinieri, with 7.43.62 minutes, and Gabriele Detti, with 7.46.10, finished in the second and third positions of the 800 meters freestyle podium, respectively.
The penultimate day of the Europeans also counted on the presence of Miguel Nascimento, who finished eighth in his series of the 50 meters freestyle, with the time of 22.46 seconds, having registered the 27th mark among 69 swimmers and missed access to the semifinals.
José Paulo Lopes increased to six the number of Portuguese swimmers with qualifying marks for Tokyo2020, joining Gabriel Lopes and Alexis Santos, both in the 200 meters style, Tamila Holub and Diana Durães, both in the 1,500 meters freestyle, and Ana Catarina Monteiro, in the 200 meters moth.
