Juliata Cohen’s first album came out yesterday, January 22nd. Titled 22:22, the album is produced by Mário Lúcio, a prodigious Cape Verdean artist, and signed by the production company Harmonia/Lusafrica, owned by Djo da Silva, who has always been the producer of Cesária Évora, among other great names from Cape Verde.
This is a multicultural and cosmopolitan album, recorded in Lisbon. On the same day, the single “Je t’aime ti di mas” was released, a soul-folk-world style song, sung in 3 languages: French, Hebrew and Cape Verdean Creole. The music video, filmed between Morocco and Paris, will be released on January 26th at 10:22 pm.
Juliata Cohen was born in France. She grew up in Israel, the daughter of a Moroccan woman and a Tunisian man. But she soon moved alone to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Cape Verde.
Owner of a unique, warm, languid and sensual voice, she sings and composes in the languages of these places, sometimes using them all in the same song. This versatility gives Juliata a prominent place in the current context of world music. In his words, singing in six languages “awakens a strong desire to create a symbolic bridge of peace across borders.”
With a powerful stage presence, the artist takes her audience on an intimate journey to the heart of her roots across several continents. Its uniqueness is marked by a rare authenticity with dense emotional material.
His music encompasses soul, longing, ritual and ancestry. Juliata Cohen created her own Blues, her Soul, her own Morna, that is, her music, which has griot, sodade, ritual and soul.
In recent months, Juliata Cohen has performed a series of concerts in Angola, Israel, Cape Verde and France. He recently participated in the Festival pela Pz, in Tarrafal, opening the night for Mayra Andrade, Chico César and Mario Lúcio.
In Portugal, there will be a concert scheduled in March, between Lisbon and Porto, to be announced soon.
