Kate Byednenko won the Red Bull Dance Your Style 2022
The public was sovereign and chose Kate, 24, to represent Portugal in the world final of Red Bull Dance Your Style.
Born in Barreiro, the 2022 National Champion joins the 2021 winner – Sílvio Ferreira, from Barcelos – to pursue a new goal: to write another page in the history of Street Dance in Johannesburg. The competition brought together on Sunday at Ubbo da Amadora, 16 finalists in successive one-on-one battles.
Portugal was part of the group of countries chosen to be part of Red Bull Dance Your Style for the third consecutive year. This urban dance competition (Street Dance) has innovative features, offering participants almost unlimited creative freedom. An example of this is the fact that dance styles are not imposed. On the dance floor, what is important is to be up to the rhythm of the music and this can mean a foray into Hip Hop, House, Popping or Locking.
Sunday (July 3) The Hood space at Ubbo Amadora was transformed into the arena for the national final of the Red Bull Dance Your Style. The 16 finalists selected previously in the auditions and qualifications showed all their talent, creativity and style in front of a very heterogeneous audience. Over the course of successive battles, the decision of who advanced was given precisely to the public – who voted through a system of color cards. The grand finale put dancers Kate and Viegas face to face. The title decision was not peaceful, as a technical draw forced an extra battle to be held. Here the doubts dissipated and the cup ended up in Kate’s hands. Born in Ukraine 24 years ago, but living in Barreiro for 20 years, Kateryna Byednenko guarantees that “the goal is to represent Portugal at the highest level”. Sílvio Ferreira, who won the 2021 national final, is also part of the Portuguese team that will compete in the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final in Johannesburg. The dancer from Barcelos is clear in his ambition: “A year has passed and I feel that I have the right preparation to dream of the world title”.
Choreographer and dancer Bruno Abreu and radio presenter Inês Brito Nogueira hosted the competition, while the music was entrusted to DJ Jul Nako. In addition to the one-on-one battles, the audience was surprised by the showcase “The BLKBRDS” – presented by Cifrão and Vasco Alves.
The Red Bull Dance Your Style 2022 World Final brings together more than 60 participants from 30 countries on December 10th in Johannesburg, South Africa.
