They are British, but live between Berlin and Zurich: the name is Kerala Dust. The British trio – Edmund Kenny on vocals and electronics, keyboardist Harvey Grant and guitarist Lawrence Howarth – got together in London in 2016. Kerala Dust’s first single, Late Sun, came out a year after the formation and debut album, Light West, was released in 2020. Kerala Dust’s music is born from a curious junction: on the one hand, Edmund explains how the experience of attending London venues such as the Fabric club or Corsica Studios served as a profound education in the fields of electronics passing through the repetition associated with that type of music being part of its DNA. On the other hand, a background linked to indie bands and a passion for the vast landscapes of American roots music also served as guidance and inspiration.

In 2020, a move to Berlin and a dive into its particular architecture and history also ended up serving as a starting point for more music, this time with the legacy of German bands like Can serving as an inspiration. Violet Drive, the brand new album released through the historic Play It Again Sam, is the result of these new coordinates. With percussion and rhythm playing a fundamental role in the new sound architecture, Violet Drive was recorded in the Alps, near Zurich, with the highest praise from critics. The important San Francisco Weekly wrote: “Accompanied by psychedelic visuals on the walls surrounding the stage, the band took the audience on a journey that bridged the gap between house and downtempo, with a mix of funk and jazz. to one or even two genres is not only difficult, but it also doesn’t describe its experimental nature”.
