On Sunday, the Almada Festival starts with two shows, at 15h: La Tempesta, at the Romeu Correia Forum and Jogging, at Incrível Almadense (both shows also have a session, at 21h30).
Then, at 6 pm, Salgueiro Maia: Cartography of a monologue, at the Cine-theater Academia Almadense. At 8:00, there’s music on the Esplanade with her band Quartet. At 9:30 pm: La Tempesta and Jogging return with the second session of the day, Beyond the Pain, which will be at the Municipal Theatre Joaquim Benite.
La Tempesta is a production that uses the historical translation of Shakespeare’s last play into the Neapolitan language of the century. XVII, held in 1983 (ed. 1984/Einaudi) by the great man of Italian theatre and cinema Eduardo De Filippo (1900-84) – and also his last creation. From the beginning, this was thought to be done with puppets, which would be realized on 4/10/1985, less than a year after his death, with the premiere at the Teatro Goldoni (Venice), opening the 33rd International Theatre Festival (part of the Biennale). This creation of the Carlo Colla Company had the decisive contribution of Eugenio Monti Colla (1939-2017) in the making of the huge puppet sculptures (about 150, in total, some more than 1m high) and the costumes and staging. It is this production, several times answered since then, that now visits Almada. What else makes this mythical production is the fact that it has the voice of Eduardo De Filippo ‘speaking’ all the characters, except Miranda and Ariel – who recorded them in his last year of life! As for the rest: welcome to a world of colors, sounds, allegories, theatrical magic and scenic effects, inhabited by human and supernatural creatures. In the certainty that, in the end, the love of Miranda and Ferdinando will triumph!
Compagnia Carlo Colla & Figli was established as a travelling puppet theatre company in 1835, but since 1906 its centre of activity has been Milan. Its valuable archive contains more than 600 manuscripts, containing the scripts of its entire historical repertoire. Franco Citterio is its current director.
