A cold and windy night marked the last day of FATACIL, but nothing could stop Mariza’s magic. Before a half-filled audience, the singer took the stage with all her strength and emotion, filling the venue with warmth and music.
“Ó Gente da Minha Terra,” “Chuva,” “Melhor de Mim,” “Barco Negro,” and “Lágrima” are masterpieces of Portuguese music brought to life by Mariza’s wonderful voice.
Mariza, the stage name of Marisa dos Reis Nunes, born in Mozambique on December 16, 1973, is a Portuguese singer who has conquered Portugal and the world. Considered one of the most important fado voices of her generation, having brought this musical genre to new audiences around the world.
Mariza moved to Portugal at the age of three and grew up in the Mouraria neighbourhood of Lisbon, the birthplace of fado. Her powerful voice and ability to reinvent fado, blending it with influences from other genres such as jazz, soul, and world music, quickly established her on the music scene. Her image, far from that of a traditional fado singer, and her charismatic stage presence contributed to her global popularity.
Her talent has been recognised with numerous awards and distinctions. The BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music (in the “Best European Artist” category), the 2018 Luso-Spanish Arts and Culture Award, and the 2014 Womex Award, dedicated to world music, are just some of the accolades she has won, along with her UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadorship.
Throughout her career, Mariza has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious concert venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Sydney Opera House.
