Lamego – Gastronomy

Most people come to Lamego – a prim, prosperous town 10km south of the Rio Douro – to see (and possibly to climb) the astonishing baroque stairway that zigzags its way up to the Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. The old town center itself has a mix of winding narrow lanes and tree-lined boulevards, with spotlit medieval landmarks looming from almost every angle. Connoisseurs also swear by Lamego’s raposeira, the famously fragrant sparkling wine, which provides a fine break between bouts of port.

Lamego is a natural base for exploring the half-ruined monasteries and chapels in the surrounding environs, one of which dates back to the time of the Visigoths.

Gastronomy

Lamego, a land of flavors and traditions, has a unique cuisine, a paradise of good and diverse food, from dishes to traditional sweets. The wild rabbit, the roast kid, as well as the delicious ham snacks, the bôlas (ham, ham, vines, tuna, chicken, sardines and cod), the pork sausages, the Teixeira biscuit, the “Lamegos ”, Among others, and the juicy fruits present in the orchards that are lost sight of along the sunny slopes of the Douro lands are just some delicacies that delight the most demanding customer.

The wisdom combined with the art of good cooking and accompanied by a bottle of good and spirited wine, or an excellent sparkling wine, give the Lamecense cuisine the authenticity and refinement of any meal.

The delicacies, which have crossed over centuries to refine the best in Lamego, prove that any menu you choose is full of culture.

Finally, this meal of immemorial palates, rediscover the historical and heritage essence of Douro knowledge and art – the Port Wine – considered by many a gift of nature.
