LEFFEST returns cinema to Sintra

The Olga Cadaval Cultural Center receives the screening of the films “Aferim”, “Asako I & II” and “O Piano”, on November 11, as part of the schedule of the 15th edition of the LEFFEST – Lisbon & Sintra Film.

The film “Aferim!”, by Radu Jude, will be broadcast at 15:00. Held in 2015, it won several awards, namely at the 2015 Berlin Festival, with the Silver Lion for Best Director; European Cinema Awards 2015, as Best European Screenwriter, and IndieLisboa 2015, with the Grand Prize for Feature Film “Cidade de Lisboa”.

In 19th-century Romania, policeman Costandin is hired by a nobleman to find a gypsy slave who is on the run. Accompanied by his son, Costandin crosses the country in search of the fugitive.

Subsequently, at 6 pm, the film “Asako I & II”, by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, created in 2018 and nominated for the Official Selection in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018, will be screened.

Asako lives in Osaka and falls in love with Baku, a ‘free-spirit’. One day, Baku inexplicably disappears, leaving Asako torn apart. Two years have passed: Asako now lives in Tokyo and meets Ryohei, who looks like Baku despite having a completely different personality. Everything seems perfect until the day Baku reappears, confronting Asako with old feelings.

Finally, at 9:30 pm, it will be possible to watch the film “The Piano”, by Jane Campion. Directed in 1993, “O Piano” has won several awards, including: three Oscars for Best Lead Actress (Holly Hunter), Best, Supporting Actress (Anna Paquin) and Best Original Screenplay (Jane Campion), at the Cannes Film Festival, with Palma d’Ouro and Best Actress (Holly Hunter), Golden Globes for Best Dramatic Actress (Holly Hunter) and BAFTA for Actress (Holly Hunter), Wardrobe and Production Design.

“OPiano” was a film that surprised on several levels. It was the horse no one would bet on to win the race from the start, but this story of a mute Scottish woman, played by Holly Hunter, who, in the 19th century, is sent to New Zealand along with her daughter and an esteemed piano for a arranged marriage to a rich farmer quickly became a phenomenon, winning audiences all over the world and countless awards.

The best of the seventh art is back in Sintra with the LEFFEST – Lisbon & Sintra Film, from November 10th to 21st, this year highlighted by the celebration of Roma Culture in all its artistic expressions.
