LIEDFEST: “Five nights to die for love” classical music at Teatro Variedades

The show “Five Ways to Die of Love” by soprano Catarina Molder, will be performed this Wednesday at Teatro Variedades with four sessions, between January 29th and February 1st.

In this Lisbon premiere of the show that opened in 2016 at the Teatro Nacional São João, the soprano gives body and voice to five very different women, united by the same destiny, in a cathartic and poetic process of death for love. The lyrical journey through feminine love continues until Sunday, February 2, with the recital “Amores e Vidas de uma Mulher”, performed by soprano Cecília Rodrigues, closing the first edition of LIEDFEST, a festival that brought and promises to bring back music classic for Parque Mayer.

Those who die most of love or who sacrifice themselves most for love in opera, literature and in life are women. They atone for the evils of the world. In opera one dies singing, the perfect catharsis – the song of death.

This show traces the journey of a woman who continually dies of love until she reaches supreme exhaustion. Love makes her live again, to die again. An eternal return. An eternal sacrifice, in which all musicians participate. Who wins in the end? Love or death? The violence of love, the violence of relationships, the violence of the pursuit of happiness. The violence of being a woman.

From the suicide for love in Chausson’s “Perpetual Song”, where, in the manner of Ophelia, the heroine drowns in the river, to the death of Isolde revisited by the composer António Chagas Rosa. Death by madness of love with Rimbaud’s “Crazy Virgin”, in the version by Luís Soldado, passing through Katierina Ismailowa from the opera “Lady Macbeth” by Shostakovitch who kills and kills herself for love, culminating with “Competência para amar” by Clan – trace this suicidal and liberating itinerary, which finally presents itself in Lisbon, within the scope of the 1st edition of LIEDFEST”.

LOVES AND LIVES OF A WOMAN – recital

  • FEBRUARY 2 | Sunday, 4 pm
  • 60’ | Age rating: PG | PT and EN subtitles

“Loves and Lives of a Woman” evokes the name and traces a trajectory of different ways of experiencing love in the feminine that begins with one of the masterpieces of the Lied repertoire of the cycle “Frauenliebe und Leben” that the composer Robert Schumann dedicates to his future wife, the talented pianist Clara Schumann. The excitement of engagement, the joy of motherhood and finally the deep sorrow of loss and the retreat into life, in the memory of that love. In stark contrast, Francis Poulenc’s cycle of poems by Louise de Vilmorin challenges the institution of marriage, with a vision of freer and more emancipated love. This journey ends with seven passionate thoughts in naked confidences from Granados’ “Canciones Amatorias”.

“Frauenliebe und Leben” (Love and Life of a Woman) Robert Schumann
“Engagement for Laughter” by Francis Poulenc
“Love Songs” (Love Songs) Henrique Granados
