Recreating Burn live poses quite a challenge. The studio album was born out of a single improvised session recorded eight years ago at Gerrard’s studio near Melbourne, Australia. Mojo magazine described the original album as follows: “Burn sounds like an enigmatic requiem, music to its own act of remembrance”.
Rather than just playing the album live, Lisa Gerrard and Jules Maxwell decided to use the original album’s melodic themes and sonic textures as a stepping stone to something new. They spent four rainy days rehearsing by the sea, at the Espinho Auditorium, before starting their tour of Portugal, part of the Misty Fest 2022 program, in which they debuted this new artistic proposal.
One Night in Porto was recorded in Portugal, at Casa da Música in Porto, in what was the third concert of that tour.
With Jules Maxwell seated on a beautiful Steinway D grand piano and Lisa Gerrard standing, visible only through her silhouette, facing him from the other side of the piano, the show begins with the mysterious opening chords of Heleali (The Sea Will Rise ), and as the song builds in intensity and eventually explodes in rhythm, Gerrard’s voice starts to rise as well.
Lisa Gerrard’s vocal choices throughout the performance are impressive, and Jules Maxwell’s muscular piano and unmistakable voice, along with additional instrumentation by James Chapman and David Kuckhermann, offer an entirely new take on Burn’s seven songs.
Songs like Orion (The Weary Huntsman) and Keson (Until My Strength Returns) are notable examples of studio album reinterpretation, with Gerrard finding new ways to explore the epic nature of the material in this live environment.
The album ends with a moving improvised epilogue entitled A Blessing, meticulously arranged for piano and voice and created exclusively for that November night in northern Portugal.
Says Lisa Gerrard: “Jules Maxwell and I originally started our creative collaboration with Dead Can Dance and we immediately realized that we had a shared connection through improvisation. One Night in Porto is a moving record of the Burn presentation shows that we held in Portugal last year and it is with great pleasure that I share it.”
Jules Maxwell adds: “It is an enormous privilege for me to share this stage with Lisa Gerrard. The original Burn studio album was built mostly in isolation, so it was a huge joy for me to finally be able to be in person with Lisa to play it live. In the show, the music flies in a way I never thought possible.”
One Night in Porto was digitally released on all platforms on May 12, 2023. The album will be available in all FNAC stores on CD and in limited edition vinyl on June 30, 2023.
