Lisbon joins the National Holocaust Memory Program

On the anniversary of the birth of Aristides Sousa Mendes – 19 July 1885 – Lisbon joined the National Program in Memory of the Holocaust.

Lisbon City Council celebrated the date, illuminating its most emblematic square: the statue of King D. José I, in Terreiro do Paço, took on the tones of the Star of David – the mark imposed on Jews by the Nazis and their allies, for the identify and persecute, dictating the extermination of nearly six million Jews.

Died in Lisbon in 1954, Consul Aristides Sousa Mendes is one of the Portuguese saviors of this period who will never forget, for his heroic acts, which saved the lives of so many fleeing the horrors of the Holocaust.
