It was no surprise that Father John Misty won over an audience eager to hear him in a memorable show in Bela Vista. Without the crowds at Bela Vista Park, which he deserved, the American filled the stage with groove and excellent music.
Father John Misty, Joshua Michael Tillman, American musician, singer, songwriter and music producer, was the next to return to Portugal with new music. Widely known for his mix of indie folk and folk rock, his satirical, often philosophical lyrics, exuberant arrangements and eccentric performance style, he did not disappoint and gave a fantastic concert in Bela Vista.
The lineup included “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All”, “Josh Tillman and the Accidental Dose”, “Nancy From Now On”, “Mr. Tillman”, “She Cleans Up”, “Screamland”, “Mental Health”, “Mahashmashana” and “I Love You, Honeybear”.
Before adopting the name Father John Misty, Tillman released several solo albums under his name (J. Tillman). Between 2008 and 2011, he was the drummer for the indie folk band Fleet Foxes, playing on their second album, Helplessness Blues.
After leaving Fleet Foxes, Tillman moved to Los Angeles and underwent a significant artistic transformation. He adopted the persona of Father John Misty, a more flamboyant, cynical and introspective character, and released his first album.
His debut as Father John Misty was a radical departure, adopting a more expansive indie sound with satirical lyrics, which was well-received by audiences and critics alike.
2015’s I Love You, Honeybear explored themes of love and marriage with a mix of testimonial and sincerity. This further solidified his reputation. 2017’s Pure Comedy, a more nihilistic and philosophical album, offered a critical commentary on modern society, consumerism and politics and was awarded a Grammy for Best Recording.
In 2018, he released God’s Favourite Customer, a more concise and introspective album exploring sadness and vulnerability. followed by Chloë and the Next 20th Century in 2022, an album that marked a stylistic shift, embracing traditional pop, jazz and orchestral arrangements, reminiscent of the Great American Songbook.
Mahashmashana released in 2024, is her latest album, whose name derives from a Sanskrit term meaning “great cremation ground”, continues to explore themes of existentialism, mental health and the passage of time, often with sophisticated arrangements.
