The Pet Shop Boys were the most important band on the first day of MEO Kalorama, and they didn’t let anyone else take credit for it, they arrived and conquered the festival.
Pet Shop Boys, one of the main attractions of this edition of the festival, the iconic English synth-pop duo formed in London in 1981, composed of Neil Tennant (vocals, keyboard) and Chris Lowe (keyboard, occasional vocals), unleashed their sophisticated electronic sound, intelligent and often witty lyrics, on stage in a visually impressive show.
With the Bela Vista Park finally well-filled with people, they danced and sang along with Neil to his songs, in a continuous flow of music that won over the audience of fans. They opened the show with “Suburbia”, “Can You Forgive Her?” and “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money)”.
“Where the Streets Have No Name”, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, “Rent”, “I Don’t Know What You Want but I Can’t Give It Any More”, “So Hard”, “Love Comes Quickly”, “Paninaro”, “You Were Always on My Mind” (Gwen McCrae cover), “Dreamland”, “Heart” followed.
As the show drew to a close, they finished with “What Have I Done to Deserve This?”, “It’s Alright” (Sterling Void cover), “Vocal”, “It’s a Sin” with “West End Girls” and “Being Boring” were reserved for the Encore.
Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe met in a London stereo shop in 1981, discovering a mutual love of disco and electronic music, and thus the Pet Shop Boys were born in homage to friends who worked in a pet shop. Their breakthrough came with “West End Girls” in 1985, which became a global hit.
The Pet Shop Boys are pioneers of synth-pop, blending electronic music with pop elements. Their sound is characterised by layered synthesisers, infectious melodies and Neil Tennant’s deadpan voice.
Their lyrics explore themes such as urban life, social commentary, relationships and, at times, subtle political criticism, all with a unique blend of irony and sincerity.
With over 100 million records sold worldwide, they are one of the most successful duos in the history of British music, their influence spanning pop, dance and electronic music, inspiring countless artists.
