L’Impératice

Closing the first day of the festival on the San Miguel Stage, we can see L’Impératice, a French band that blends pop, nu-disco and electronic music with a distinctly retro-futuristic and cinematic feel.

Formed in Paris in 2012 by Charles de Boisseguin, the band’s name, meaning “The Empress”, reflects their elegant and somewhat majestic sound. L’Impératrice creates a unique sound of danceable and sophisticated “cosmic pop/space-disco”.

A hallmark of their disco and funk influences is that their groovy, lush synths create rich soundscapes to which they add catchy melodies. Although predominantly in French, their recent work, particularly on the Pulsar album, includes more collaborations with English-speaking artists and some songs in English.

Their arrangements often evoke the atmosphere of 1970s film soundtracks, contributing to their unique atmosphere.

The band’s sound has evolved from a more instrumental and relaxed beginning to incorporate pop elements and stronger vocals, emphasising a collective creative process, with all six members contributing to the composition and arrangements.

The members of L’Impératrice are:

  • Maud “Louve” Ferron – lead vocals, synthesizer (joined in 2024, replacing Flore Benguigui)
  • Charles de Boisseguin – piano, keyboards, synthesizers, backing vocals (founder)
  • Tom Daveau – drums, percussion, sampler, guitar
  • David Gaugué – bass, bass synthesizer, guitar, backing vocals
