‘Listen’, ‘Mosquito’, ‘Patrick’ and ‘Vitalina Varela’ among Oscars candidates

The Portuguese Academy of Cinema announced today the four films nominated for the vote of Portugal’s candidate for the category of Best International Film at the 93rd edition of the Oscars, in April 2021, chosen among the 33 feature films eligible.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he four nominees were chosen by a “pre-selection committee”, composed of the director and producer Gonçalo Galvão Teles, the actress Isabel Abreu, the director Lauro António, the director of photography Miguel Sales Lopes, the director Monique Rutler and the actor and director Welket Bungué.

The 93rd edition of the Oscars is scheduled for April 25, 2021, in Los Angeles, in the United States of America.

Listen‘, produced by Bando à Parte, is the first fictional feature film by Ana Rocha de Sousa, a family drama inspired by real events, about a family of Portuguese emigrants in London, whose custody of their children is removed. , on suspicion of ill-treatment.

Mosquito‘, by João Nuno Pinto, is a production by Leopardo Filmes, in co-production with Alfama Films Production (France), APM Produções (Portugal), Delicatessen Films (Brazil) and Mapiko Filmes (Mozambique), which had a world premiere in January, at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, in the Netherlands, and reached Portuguese theaters in early March, just before the closure and declaration of a state of emergency, due to the covid-19.

‘Patrick’, the first feature film by actor and director Gonçalo Waddington, is a fiction about identity and individuality, which has as a background a case of kidnapping and pedophilia.

Pedro Costa’s ‘Vitalina Varela‘ debuted in 2019 at the Locarno Festival in Switzerland, where he received the top prize, the Golden Leopard, as well as the protagonist, Vitalina Varela, who was twice awarded as best actress.
