Loulé hosts Tour of Portugal by Bicycle
After 20 years, the municipality of Loulé once again hosts a stage of the Tour of Portugal by Bicycle. On the 12th of August, the third stage of the race will depart from Sines and arrive in the city of Loulé.
There are 191.8 km of a route that will pass through other parts of the county, such as Pé do Coelho, Taipa, Salir, Tôr, Cruz da Assumada, Boliqueime, culminating at the moment when cyclists will cross the finish line installed on Avenida José from Costa Mealha, around 17:25.
This will be the longest stage of this 84th Tour of Portugal and the only one in the Algarve. The last time the peloton passed through here was on August 7, 2003, on a stage that connected Loulé to Beja.
For the municipality, this return of the premier event will certainly be a moment of great joy, as this is the land of cycling, a modality to which people from Loulé are emotionally and historically connected. It should be remembered that, in 1988, the Englishman Cayn Theakston, representing the colors of Louletano Sports Club, was the winner of the 51st Tour of Portugal by Bicycle. The competition returns to Loulé in the year in which this club celebrates its 100th anniversary.
On the other hand, the presence in this event will be equally important for the promotion and international projection of the name of Loulé, given the media coverage surrounding the Tour. The local economy will also gain leverage here, as many enthusiasts of cycling emotions are expected in the city, at a time when many tourists are on holiday in the Algarve and who will not miss the opportunity to follow this arrival.
The Municipality will prepare a set of activities alluding to cycling in this arrival of the Volta a Portugal stage.
