Luísa Sobral marks today the tenth anniversary of her first album, the acclaimed The Cherry on My Cake, released on March 14, 2011, when the artist was only 24 years old.
The album was an immediate success in Portugal, occupying the top spots of the tops of the sales for several weeks and even ending up reaching that year’s Platinum Disc.
The resounding success with the public and critics gave way to an extensive national and international tour. In the period that followed, Luísa played at the Jazz Festivals in Cartagena, Barcelona and London, opened for Ute Lemper at Union Chapel (London) and for Melody Gardot during a tour in Germany. The year culminated with a performance on the mythical BBC program ‘Later… with Jools Holland’.
Luísa Sobral is today one of the most important composers and singers of the new generation of Portuguese musicians. Since 2011, he released four more critically acclaimed albums – There’s a Flower in my Bedroom (2013), Lu-Pu-I-Pi-Sa-Pa (2014), Luísa (2016) and Rosa (2018) – and composed for artists like António Zambujo, Ana Moura, Gisela João and to brother Salvador Sobral, in a partnership whose result is known to all Portuguese, the song Amar Pelos Dois, winner of the Eurovision Festival in 2017.
Luísa continues to be a regular presence on national and international stages, with tours from North to South of Portugal and countries as varied as Israel, Morocco, South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Brazil. In 2019, she debuts in Australia – at the prestigious Adelaide WOMAD Festival – and in Japan.
In 2020, Luísa again expands her creative horizons and creates the innovative O Avesso da Canção, a podcast where she talks to big names in Portuguese music about the art of song writing. The first season, which featured guests such as Jorge Palma, Tim, Tiago Bettencourt or Carolina Deslandes, counted over 45,000 listeners and was considered the most heard music podcast in Portugal in February 2021.
