Luna Fest takes place from the 6th to the 8th of September, at Praça da Canção in Coimbra. The festival line-up has now been announced and confirms Luna Fest as the most rock’n’roll festival in Portugal.
Natty Bo & The Top Cats and Weird Omen are the new names that close the program at Luna Fest, a festival that has rock’n’roll as its identity.
Internationally acclaimed for being wild, energetic and soulful since 1996, Natty Bo & The Top Cats play authentic Jamaican Ska, Rocksteady & Reggae from South London. Led by the incredible showman Natty Bo, who performs with a strong front brass line, Miss Megu also excels on alto saxophone. Top Cats are also founding members of Ska Cubano who played with Jamaican legends such as The Skatalites, Laurel Aitken, Prince Buster, Dennis Alcapone & Winston Reedy, Alton Ellis, Derrick Morgan, Roy Shirley, The Trojans, Desmond Dekker, among others. The party is guaranteed with the best, most original Reggae, Rocksteady and Jamaican Ska at Luna Fest with Natty Bo and the Top Cats.
With four LPs and six singles later, Weird Omen is a trio with an atypical formation, from the new generation of Psychedelic Garage, which spits out its primitive and unique garage, a deluge of trash metal, reverb and fuzzzzzz. A cryptic garage trance, a mix of crushed ’60s tones and a hollow psychedelic neo-garage that make them a band apart from the current new waves of Rock´n´Roll.
The Luna Fest lineup also features Jon Spencer, The Psychedelic Furs, Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds, The Gories, Lene Lovich, DEADLETTER, Theater of Hate, LA ÉLITE, Johnny Throttle, Carrion Kids, Mão Morta, The Legendary Tigerman, Club Makumba, Selma Uamusse, Belle Chase Hotel, The Twist Connection, M’as Foice, Birds Are Indie and So DeaD.
American singer, songwriter and guitarist Jon Spencer, an unavoidable name in the history of rock’n’roll, is linked to some of the most successful projects in punk, rock and blues, such as Pussy Galore, Boss Hog, Heavy Trash and the project under his name, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and returns to Portugal nine years after performing at Reverence Valada, in Cartaxo. Jon Spencer is perhaps the last living symbol and reference of what raw and true Rock’n’Roll” is. Jon Spencer is synonymous with the stage, voracious, explosive and accurate in every approach to his audience.
The Psychedelic Furs, born in the post-punk phase of British music, is one of the most influential bands on the 80s music scene, having established itself with hits such as “Love My Way”, “Heaven”, “The Ghost In You ” and “Heartbreak Beat” and, of course, “Pretty In Pink.” They’ve released eight studio albums, spawned several compilations, a box set, and a live DVD, and inspired one of the most iconic film soundtracks of all time.
Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds (Former guitarist of Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Gun Club) come to present the new album That Delicious Vice released by In The Red Records. The late Mark Lanegan said, “They should make Kid Congo Powers their hall of fame. Some New Kind Of Kick is an instant classic of sex, drugs and punk rock by one of underground music’s most legendary kings of cool”. Need I say more?
Founded in Detroit in the second half of the 1980s, the garage-punk band The Gories was considered “the best garage band in America since the 60s” by Jack White. Inspired by The Sonics, The Seeds, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, MC5 and Iggy and the Stooges, their music ended up becoming an influence on several bands such as The Horrors, Black Lips and The Black Keys
The 1978 hit “Lucky Number” catapulted American Lene Lovich into a successful career. With connections to the New Wave, Lene left the United States for the United Kingdom as a teenager, where she met Les Chappell, who was her partner, producer and husband.
The British post-punk band DEADLETTER are considered one of the great revelations of London punk and are present at the festival.
Founded in 1980 in London, British post-punk band Theater of Hate arrives at Luna Fest after a 2023 tour of almost 40 dates with The Mission and The Chameleons.
Catalan duo LA ÉLITE return to Luna Fest and their influences range from 1980s punk rock, new wave and electronic music.
The British Johnny Throttle are a kind of punk rock ‘supergroup’, with members of The Parkinsons, Lucy & The Rats and The Gaggers joining forces to play real rock n’ roll the way it was always supposed to be – arrogant, idiotic and straight to the point. They launch into a furious 20-minute set of mini-operas inspired by Modern Lovers meets Slaughter and the Dogs meets Electric Eels with the kind of incompetent teenage enthusiasm that only borderline middle-age can truly muster.
Carrion Kids, a punk from Mexico City, formed at the end of 2015, are defined by the traditional dynamics of four instruments: rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass and drums. As a result of their roots in Punk, Post-Punk and Garage Rock, their sound is driven by jangly guitars and a solid, aggressive foundation.
All these international names have a scheduled performance on the Main Stage while on the Lux Stage, entirely dedicated to national music in partnership with the record label Lux Records, we have national acts Mão Morta, The Legendary Tigerman, Club Makumba, Selma Uamusse, Belle Chase Hotel, Twist Connection, M’as Foice, Birds Are Indie and So DeaD.
