Since 2007, the Portuguese Rotary Foundation’s Lyrical Singing Contest has been asserting itself as a major initiative in the dissemination of lyrical singing at national level.
The 11th edition of the Portuguese Rotary Foundation’s Lyrical Singing Contest returns to the stage as early as next November and, at this moment, applications are open to bring a new generation of lyric singers to the public.
All people who are interested in participating in the contest must consult the contest rules and fill in the online registration form (here) until October 18th, at midnight. Competitors will be selected until the 2nd of November for the eliminatory competitions, taking place in the city that is closest to their place of residence.
Between the 20th of November and the 5th of December, the contestants of the Lyrical Singing Competition will pass through the eliminatory tests, in the cities of Porto, Cascais, Angra do Heroísmo and Ponta Delgada, followed by two semifinals, in Porto and Cascais, culminating in the final test, in Lisbon, at the Centro Cultural de Belém.

The initiative, promoted by the Portuguese Rotary Foundation, aims to promote the artistic improvement of young lyric singers, with advanced studies and at the beginning of their careers, supporting the continuation of their studies through the awarding of scholarships. This support is offered by the Portuguese Rotary Foundation and other entities associated with the competition, as is the case of the Lisbon City Council, and is essential for the realization of the artistic aspirations of young lyric singers.
In a year marked by adversity, the Portuguese Rotary Foundation and the National Art School of Music at the National Conservatory, a reference partner in the organization, consider that “the implementation of the initiative appears particularly important in the context of current circumstances, with precarious situations with which currently artists, agents and cultural institutions are debating, resulting from the pandemic”.
The Lyrical Singing Competition has already rewarded a wide range of singers who currently score on national and international stages, such as sopranos Susana Gaspar and Sónia Grané, half-soprano Cátia Moreso or baritones André Baleiro and Hugo Oliveira, among other laureates.
