Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini on stage in Portugal

May 8th, at Casino Estoril and May 9th, at Coliseu dos Recreios, at 9:30 pm

In the year that marks the centenary of the death of the Italian composer Giancomo Puccini and 120 years since the premiere of one of his most emblematic works, Madame Butterfly returns to the scene, in Portugal.

With a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on the play Madame Butterfly, by David Belasco, based on the short story of the same name by John Luther Long, this opera was described by Puccini as the “most deeply felt and creative”.

Set in Japan, Madame Butterfly, one of the most performed operas in the Italian repertoire, tells the tragic story of a beautiful young geisha, aged 15, “delicate as a butterfly”, Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly), who falls in love with Pinkerton, a lieutenant in the US Navy, ending up sacrificing his family, his religion and his own life for him.

The show takes to the stage with staging by Federico Figueroa, artistic direction by María José Molina, choreography by Julian Hernandez and interpretation by Companhia Materlírica España, directed by Carlos Diez.

“Madame Butterfly” premiered for the first time at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in February 1904. It arrived in Lisbon four years later where it took to the stage at the Teatro São Carlos on March 10, 1908. This year, 120 years after its premiere, it is presented in two of the most renowned concert halls in the country.
