Roadshow in Portugal in the cities of Braga, Porto and Lisbon

The Tourism of the Madrid City Council, the AVE Cities Network and Spanish Tourism held, between October 15 and 17, a roadshow in Portugal in the cities of Braga, Porto and Lisbon. The purpose of these presentations was to make known to tourism professionals the ease of connection between the main Portuguese cities and Madrid, as well as the 29 connections connecting Madrid to other Spanish cities through the AVE Network.

This roadshow was attended by the main players of national tourism, through travel agents and tour operators who had the opportunity to get to know first hand the latest, cosmopolitan and modern news that the Spanish capital has to offer, as well as the commercialization hypotheses that the AVE Cities Network will have from January 2020.

As Consuelo Sánchez, Tourism Manager of Madrid for the Portuguese market indicates, “Madrid has undergone numerous renovations in recent months and we consider that ‘our brothers’ from the neighboring country should know them firsthand. One of the big news was the implementation of the Madrid Central directive that limits the circulation of private cars in the city center, while in hotels, the city has grown by more than 2,000 new beds in 4 and 5 star category hotels, including the Four Seasons Hotel Complejo Canalejas, the Ritz Mandarin Oriental, scheduled to open to the public even before the end of 2020, the RIU Plaza of Spain, VP Plaza of Spain, Bless Hotel, Hyatt Centric, Aloft Hotel and Pestana Plaza Mayor of the Pestana Group, among others. opening of several tourist complexes of great cultural value, such as the Liria Palace, the Masaveu Foundation and the Royal Theater’s Royal Flamenco program. ”

Portugal is among the most important tourist issuing markets for the city of Madrid. Between January and August 2019, the capital received 136,456 national travelers, resulting in 284,003 overnight stays. In 2018, the city received 204,515 Portuguese travelers, an increase of 3.21% over the same period last year, and a total of 413,557 overnight stays, an increase of 2.11%.

According to Juan Castro, AVE Cities Technician “The Portuguese market is very important for AVE destinations since, due to its geographical proximity, it can help combat the seasonality of overnight stays, besides being a market with great interest in high speed connections. Through the many direct flights from Lisbon and Porto to Madrid, traveling to other Spanish cities via the Network becomes easy, fast, practical and economical. ”

Even before the end of this year, the Network will launch a website designed to work directly with travel agencies, but also with the final audience. This platform will offer the possibility to book train + hotel + destination experiences, combining synergies between cities connected to the high-speed network.

The AVE City Network is a tourist product resulting from the merger of the train as a sustainable, fast and efficient means of transport par excellence and connecting a total of 30 destinations.

Caroline Tensi, Head of Tourism Connectivity for Madrid says: “Madrid and Portugal are now closer than ever, thanks to the numerous connections offered by different airlines. It is essential to travel to Madrid to discover firsthand all the news that the capital has to offer. And perhaps enjoy the stay to extend travel for a few days to visit one or several cities of AVE such as Barcelona, Seville, Valencia or Granada, newly incorporated into the network; or smaller cities, but with a fantastic level of cultural and gastronomic offer, such as Cuenca, Segovia or Toledo. “
