On Tuesday, the Almada Festival starts at 6pm, with a conversation with Fran Nuñez, director of Manuela Rey Is In Da House, on the terrace of Escola D. António da Costa. At 7 pm, at Incrível Almadense, it is the last opportunity to see Entrelinhas, the co-creation of Tiago Rodrigues and Tónan Quito. At 8:30 pm another free concert on the Esplanada Stage, this time with Bairro do Grito. Finally, at 10 pm, Gandini Juggling will present LIFE event nº 3 on the Big Stage.
The show Life was born from Sean Gandini and Kati Ylä-Hokkala’s long-standing admiration for the iconic North American choreographer Merce Cunningham (1919-2009). The premise was as simple as it was daring: wondering what would result from a hypothetical encounter between Cunningham and juggling. The result consists of a perfect fusion of Gandini’s art and virtuosity with the choreographer’s geometricism and spontaneous abstraction. With something more: the transmutation into the juggling ‘numbers’ of the Cunninghamian ‘event’ principle. This show is based on the collage of fragments (pre-existing and new), non-narrative, and with space for chance — for the unmediated inner impulse. In other words, it is a true approach to the experience of movement in its pure state. Life is based on the choreographies CRWDSPCR (1993) and Split Sides (2003), by Merce Cunningham, both from their computer-generated composition phase. The piece is organized according to the technique of addition (polyrhythm and rhythmic dissociation of increasing complexity), calling upon musical principles, whether from Jaques Dalcroze or Carl Orff.
Gandini Juggling was created in 1991 by Gandini and Hokkala. Since then, this duo has debuted more than 40 creations and performed thousands of presentations around the world. The strong point of these creators’ philosophy lies in the intersection of the art of juggling with other artistic/performative disciplines. In 2022 they brought Almada Smashed 2 — the same year in which they received the award for Best Dance Show, awarded by The Guardian, which highlighted that in this show “the jugglers, like Cunningham, make the rhythm visible in abstract puzzles, at the core imminently human.”
