Manny could be the first US congressman born in Portugal

Manny Santos plans to become the first Republican elected by the state of Connecticut to the House of Representatives in 12 years and the first congressman ever born in Portugal in the November 6 North American elections.

Manuel Santos, who competes as Manny Santos, says being from another country is an advantage in the context of the United States.

“Citizens believe that I can better understand and cope with the complexities of immigration,” says business analyst, who emigrated from Portugal to the family in 1974 and a US citizen 30 years ago.

Santos is competing in Connecticut’s fifth constituency, where the Democratic Party’s political dominance is a stumbling block and gives the odds of victory to its opponent, Jahana Hayes.

However, having been mayor between 2013 and 2015 of a city that did not elect a Republican leader 30 years ago, the city of Meriden, Manny Santos believes he could succeed if he wins the vote of nonpartisan voters.

The Portuguese-American candidate says support for his campaign has come from many quarters: “Actually, I have gotten the support of many Democrats who have realized that today’s Democratic Party is not the same party as it was 30 or 40 years ago.”
