On display until next Sunday, May 18, at Carpintarias de São Lázaro
Maranã debuts live in Portugal today with a show that is already sold out
The premiere session of MARAÑA, tonight at Carpintarias de São Lázaro, is sold out. Tickets for the other sessions, between May 16 and 18, of this performance that interweaves tradition and experimentalism, are available on the immersive experiences platform FEVER.
Created and directed by Paula Riquelme, MARAÑA combines contemporary circus, dance, puppets, physical theatre and live music, transforming the performers’ bodies into living tapestries, where the threads come to life, like an organism.
Created and conceived by women, MARAÑA brings together a creative team that ranges from Riquelme’s artistic direction to the co-production of Majda Amroun from Haize, to the five artists on stage, to the DJS Kotoe and Anya, who liven up the party on the penultimate day.
MARAÑA’s scenography is meticulously hand-woven by Paula Riquelme, also known as Lapaulari – a Chilean aerial choreographer, circus arts director and textile artist with over 20 years of experience. Her moving textures transform into living, luminous tapestries, merging with the five performers in a choreography of interdependence, where everything works as a single organism. “We need to create a kind of magic through beauty, which people cannot describe with words”, says Riquelme. Born in Chile and currently based in Berlin, Riquelme has distinguished herself for the multidisciplinary and deeply emotional approach with which she constructs her works. In collaboration with the Haize. At the Art Centre, she has been the creative force behind several projects presented in recent months. Her work has been compared to that of artists such as Joana Vasconcelos, Chiharu Shiota and El Anatsui, although she maintains her voice – intimate, symbolic and deeply human.
To celebrate MARAÑA’s debut in Portugal, the exhibition SER ES, conceived in Lisbon and born from the intimate encounter between Paula Riquelme and the city – from vintage markets to knitting sessions, from historic neighborhoods to the gestures and knowledge shared by those who live and preserve the Portuguese textile tradition – will be on display until June 22 at the Haize gallery in Marvila 8. The exhibition presents eight textile sculptures created from recycled wool sweaters, many of them donated by friends who associate each piece with memories of loved ones.

About Paula Riquelme Orbenes
Paula Riquelme Orbenes, known as Lapaulari, is a Chilean aerial choreographer, circus arts director and textile artist whose work has revolutionised interaction with space. With over 20 years of experience, Paula stands out in this niche for her unique ability to transform spaces and experiences through immersive scenarios and circus performances, which combine aerial dance, textile sculpture and visual art. Due to an injury that kept her from the career she was pursuing at the time, the artist, immobilised in bed, dedicated herself to crochet as a way to at least keep her hands moving. It was then that she began to weave a wall – the closest thing she could build and that, like her, would rise into the air. This act of resilience became the foundation of Maraña, her ongoing passion for exploring the world of textiles, in parallel with movement and space.
Some of her work has been presented at international festivals such as the Chicago International Puppets Festival, Fusion (Germany), Theaterspektakel (Switzerland), Kultura-Nova (Netherlands) and the Pina Bausch Zentrum, where she has made a significant impact with her innovative approach to creating environments that transcend the conventional. In 2016, her creative vision led her to be hired as the aerial choreography director for the iconic opening ceremony of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, directed by Volker Hesse, one of the many international projects that reflect her versatility and ability to transform anything into a memorable piece of art. Since 2019, Paula has been living in Germany at Monopol Berlin, where she continues to develop her most personal and ambitious project: Maraña. This work, which has been constantly evolving for eight years, explores the relationship between physical and emotional space and presents itself in both art creations and large-scale performances, maintaining an ongoing dialogue between creativity, experiences and the transformation of space.
Paula found her true passion in crochet, and that was when she presented her first wall piece, which, in conversation with close friends and her daughter, the girl suggested “é mama araña”, that is, it is the mother spider, so they shortened the name to Maraña.
