The President of the Republic announced Wednesday that it is his intention to visit Mozambique later this year, in the phase of reconstruction of the country now devastated by the passage of Cyclone Idai.
“After this moment, recognizing reality and what remains of reality, and looking at the most pressing and urgent health and social issues, the rebuilding begins for a long time,” said the Head of State, stressing that Portugal will, as it has been so far, in this next phase.
“I, as President Nyusi agrees with me and understand that there are conditions for this, I would like to go to Mozambique in this new phase of reconstruction, at the end of the year, to witness to the resumption of the lives of thousands of our brothers and sisters,” realized.
Also, Pope Francisco, remember, announced that he will visit Mozambique this year, from 4 to 6 September.
The President of the Republic, it is stressed, considered last week that to visit in this first moment Mozambique would be something “demagogic“, arguing that it could not “appear unexpectedly“.
The latest balance of cyclone Idai – already considered the worst climate disasters in the Southern Hemisphere – points to 468 deaths in Mozambique alone. Of the 30 Portuguese who were initially uncontested, only five remain in this situation, said the Secretary of State for Civil Protection.
