Marcelo highlights athletes’ achievements at the Youth Olympic Games
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, today highlighted the importance and impact that Portuguese athletes had in Argentina during the Youth Olympic Games.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa received today in the Palace of Belém the Portuguese delegation that was present in the Olympic Games of Youth, in Buenos Aires, and thanked the performance of the same.
In these Games, Portugal returned with five medals, two gold and three silver, and the gold medals were won by the women’s futsal team and by the triathlete Alexandre Montez (in the mixed courier), who won the silver medal in the individual competition, while the rest were obtained by the men’s handball team and the pair of gymnastics Madalena Picks and Manuel Candeias.
On that occasion, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa gave an account of the importance and impact that these achievements of the Portuguese athletes had in Argentina, a country with little Portuguese emigration.

Claiming to have accompanied the presence of the Portuguese youth in the competitions in Argentina, which was also done by the Portuguese, the President of the Republic believes that it is possible to monitor Portuguese citizens in future competitions and thanks to the young athletes for their efforts.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed the wish that the young athletes have a lot of future ahead, with many medals, even those that are the other medals, the ones of the fulfilled duty: “As President of the Republic, in this great meeting that wanted to be with all and with all, thank you very much in the name of Portugal. “They were fantastic, they were exceptional, they will certainly be exceptional, because this is only a step to a life of triumphs, and these triumphs are yours, personal, but they are also from Portugal.”
The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Education, Tiago Brandão Rodrigues, the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, João Paulo Rebelo, the President of the Portuguese Olympic Committee, José Manuel Constantino, and representatives of the federations, among the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, Fernando Gomes.
