Marcelo participates in International Youth Forum in Egypt

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will travel to Egypt in early November to attend the second edition of the International Youth Forum in the city of Sharm el-Sheikh.

In response to a request from the Head of State, the Parliament is authorized to travel to the Arab Republic of Egypt “from 4 to 6 November next to participate in the International Youth Forum”, in a draft resolution on the agenda of the Foreign Affairs Committee, which will be voted on in plenary.

The assent of the Assembly of the Republic to the displacements of the head of state is a formality imposed by the Constitution, which establishes that the President of the Republic can not absent himself from the national territory without authorization from the parliament.

Frequently, the dates of official travel that are approved by the deputies include, for safety, one or two days more than the actual period of the visit.

The International Youth Forum is a platform for dialogue between young people around the world and policy makers, launched with the support of the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The first edition was held in November 2017, also in Sharm el-Sheikh, a seaside resort in the south of the Sinai Peninsula.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, visited Egypt in April of this year, at the invitation of his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who had been in Portugal on a state visit in November 2016.

Two weeks ago, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and al-Sisi met in New York at a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
