Maria João launches today the new album that celebrates 40 years of career
Maria João is a living treasure, an artist recognized and applauded globally that, however, she has never ceased to show herself unrequiet from a creative point of view, showing herself permanently willing to risk new adventures, to seek new solutions, to present new projects.
The future is always the best place, believes the singer who, over the decades, was an active voice in various and fruitful partnerships, from Mário Laginha and Carlos Bica to Aki Takase.
Now, echoing her ancestry, Maria João flies back between Lisbon and Maputo for the creation, in the company of João Farinha and André Nascimento, allies of the OGRE project (with whom she recorded several albums since 2012, including the recent and very applauded Songs For Shakespeare, of 2022), a new album that crosses her original voice with gliding and evocative electronic textures.
With the collaboration of new and recurring musicians – from drummers Silvan Strauss and Texito Langa to guitarist Valter Mabas or percussionist Cheny Wa Gune, responsible for the warm timbila colorations, Maria João’s new work further emphasizes the communal power of voices through the TP50 choir in which they harmonise Xixel Langa, Xizimba, Leticia Deozina, Nadya Cosmo and Onholove. The legends of Mozambique Mucavele and Stewart Sukuma also add their voices to the Portuguese singer.
He was also the Portuguese musician and producer Luís Fernandes, a renowned artist in the area of electronic avant-garde, the role of signing the production of a work that implied travel between Portugal and Mozambique and musical bridges between the past and the future, jazz and world music, rhythm and melody.
In 10 new themes, including the single “Ao Sol“, this new record of Maria João presents an original musical vision in which her singular and passionate voice occupies the center, affirming itself once again as an unparalleled expressive force, capable of the deepest emotions. “Esperança”, “African Foxtrot”, “O Amor é Veradeiro”, “Beatriz”, “Dário”, “As Tuas Tranças”, theme in which Mucavele participates, who also signs the song, “Papalaty”, by Sukuma, “Dia” and “Praia” complete the alignment of a work that is a proof of life, ingenuity and art of one of the most challenging and striking voices of today.
As of today, February 28, it is available on all platforms and physical disks at the usual points of sale. Let Abundance come!
