Pianist Maria João Pires acts at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation with the Children’s Choir of the University of Lisbon
The Maria João Pires‘ recital, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon, will have a special guest, the Children’s Choir of the University of Lisbon, on March 21st.
This is the third and last recital of the Portuguese pianist, currently integrated in the Gulbenkian Music Season, with a program dedicated to Beethoven and the interpretation of two major works in the repertoire.
Between the two works, the greatest Portuguese pianist shares the stage with one of the most awarded youth choirs in Portugal, to interpret works by Schubert, Mendelssohn and Arvo Pärt.
Maria João Pires, has been developing a work close to voice and choral music.
In 2012, the artist started the project ‘Partitura Choirs’, a network of children’s choirs for children from socially disadvantaged environments, such as Hesperos Choir, in Belgium.
The 75-year-old pianist recently received the 2019 Martha de la Cal / Personality of the Year Award from the Foreign Press Association in Portugal,
She was also decorated by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, with the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique.
Maria João Pires’ return to Lisbon marked the 2019/2020 Gulbenkian Music Season, with three performances scheduled to sell out since the initial ticket sales phase.
