Does a cabbage have beauty? by Barbara Marque
From April 5th to May 28th
Machado de Castro National Museum
.Inauguration at 6 pm
.Free entry
Bárbara Marques discovered the brave new world of vegetables. Through photographic art, she wanted to enhance its beauty and enhance the importance of the place of vegetables in our lives, beyond food. A way of praising mother nature’s products, which come to us from the hand of farmers, but also of promoting the importance of careful and healthy food in an accessible language.
“After all, what are vegetables to us? Are they just fiber-rich foods, essential for digestion and providing us with vitamins and minerals? Or beings nourished by unique and singular colors and shapes with their own space in our daily lives?”, asks the photographer. The images she presents to us offer the answer, through her thoughts and her gaze.

Considered a minor genre by the 19th-century painting academy. In the 17th century – curiously at the same time as it reached its greatest splendor – still, life sometimes reached a complex and multifaceted dimension. This type of painting deals with very diverse themes, choosing objects produced by human ingenuity, combined or not with inanimate models of the animal, mineral, and vegetable world – from this last group the motifs that reproduce flowers, fruits, and vegetables stand out. This communication was thought in articulation with the photography exhibition of Bárbara Marques.

Black Scarves, Straw Hats, and Gold Earrings are multiple books: A travel report based on As Mulheres do meu País, written in the late 1940s by Maria Lamas, a leading figure of political activism in Portugal.
An essay about the texts that women didn’t write and the lives they didn’t live could have changed the vision of History.
The autobiographical narrative of a writer who tries to find and unveil her own story in the stories of anonymous women who populate our imagination.
Susana Moreira Marques travels through the noisy villages of the past and the museum villages of the present; she passes by modern hotels where the progress of having a room of her own has already arrived; she meets women who still live in the silence of yesteryear; she seeks to record old memories and ask questions that are useful today: she begins to design the women of the country of the future.

Marta Pessoa

The book As Penélopes brings together original literary texts by a group of twelve authors challenged to write from the figure of Penélope and the heritage of the fishing community of Póvoa de Varzim, to pay homage to the Feminine. The collaborative art project of Bairro dos Livros establishes a dialogue between Literature and the art of Embroidery, in a contemporary installation created with Póvoa’s sweaters that interpret the various stories published in this edition. The embroidery used in the installation As Penélopes, executed by knitters from the Group of Friends of the Museum of Ethnography and History of Póvoa do Varzim, combines the traditional symbols of the typical pattern of Póvoa de Varzim with images taken from the original texts written for this work.
The project earned the European Heritage Days international distinction, having been selected in 2022 as one of the twenty best European stories.
