Throughout seven songs, Maria leads us along the narrow and intoxicating path that love draws over the abyss, balancing between the risk of certainties empty of imagination and the risk of falling.
After the colorful sadness and anger that we found in Chove na Sala, Água nos Olhos (2019), an album in which he collaborated with several musicians and producers, and the tenderness and irony of A Flor da Urtiga (2021), produced by Noah Lennox (Panda Bear), Benefício da Dúvida appears considerably more stripped down, with simple and raw arrangements created within an intimate group: Júlia Reis, on voice and tambourine, and Leonardo Bindilatti who, with Maria and Júlia, signs the production. The use of minimal means mirrors a long period of solo touring, which included two creative residencies (at Teatro Viriato, in Viseu, and at gnration, in Braga), where some of these songs were born, later recorded between Braga and Lisbon.
For this occasion, Maria calls her cousin and collaborator since childhood, Lourenço Crespo, to tell stories simultaneously – the songs coexisting with the visual narrative created from home videos, in a search for links with the past not nostalgic but structural, from its roots.
Maria Reis’ solo discography includes Benefício da Dúvida, from 2022, A Flor da Urtiga, from 2021, Chove na Sala, Água nos Olhos, from 2019, celebrated on stage in a monumental night at the Culturgest Grand Auditorium in February 2020, and the inaugural EP Maria, from 2017. Forever remains the legacy of the rock band Pega Monstro, which he formed and led with his sister Júlia Reis, both for the memorable songs and concerts and for the example of cultural and civic agency they promoted. Maria Reis has also been collaborating regularly with names such as Sara Graça, Joana da Conceição, Gabriel Ferrandini, Miguel Abras, or Rudi Brito in concerts, artistic multimedia presentations, music, and poetry publishing.
