Portimão Marina® is the “Bluest” Marina in Portugal

National leadership in sustainability

Infrastructure, environmental education, and 25 consecutive years of Blue Flag status guarantee the highest distinction awarded by ABAE and APA.

Marina de Portimão® was awarded the prestigious “Bluest Marina 2025” prize, awarded by the Blue Flag Association of Europe (ABAE) and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA). This award recognises marinas that, in addition to meeting the rigorous criteria of the Blue Flag program, stand out for the excellence and impact of their environmental education actions. The official award ceremony took place at the UATLA Auditorium, at the Fábrica da Pólvora, in Barcarena.

This year, Marina de Portimão® achieved the highest score nationally, being distinguished among the 18 marinas and recreational ports with Blue Flag status in Portugal. This is the first time that Portimão Marina® has received this award, a fact that reinforces the significance of the distinction.

To be elected, Marina de Portimão® developed several innovative and inclusive initiatives throughout the year, involving the local community, students, visitors, and partners. Of particular note are the Portimão City Council, the Teia d’Impulsos Association, Vela Solidária, and Algarve Sun Boats, which contributed to the goal of promoting sustainability, protecting marine ecosystems, and raising environmental awareness. In this sense, the actions reflect Marina de Portimão®’s commitment to preserving the environment and valuing natural heritage.

It should be added that the “Marina Mais Azul 2025” award is granted based on the criteria defined by the Blue Flag program, namely water quality, equipment safety, environmental information and education, services, environmental quality, and accessibility, and is awarded to marinas that achieve the highest level of evaluation nationally.

For the management of Marina de Portimão®: “This award is a recognition of the continuous work of our team and our partners in promoting good environmental practices. We will continue to invest in projects that inspire and mobilise the community towards a more sustainable future.”

The “Marina Mais Azul 2025” award and the attainment of the international certificate of excellence from the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) for 25 consecutive years, awarded the Blue Flag, reinforce Marina de Portimão®’s position as a national benchmark in sustainable management and environmental education. This distinction is aligned with the objectives of the National Environmental Education Strategy, aiming at reducing the carbon footprint, minimising environmental impacts, and preserving the habitats of local fauna and flora.

Furthermore, Marina de Portimão®’s pioneering role in environmental sustainability practices should be highlighted, including selective waste collection systems, wastewater treatment, charging stations for electric vehicles, solar energy, and environmental education programs for the protection of the marine environment.

The “Bluest Marina 2025” distinction reinforces a set of recent recognitions, including the “Best Marina in Southern Europe” award at the World Luxury Travel Awards 2025 and the “SuperYacht Ready Marina” certification. It also joins prestigious awards such as the Jack Nichol Award, the “5 Golden Anchors,” and the International Clean Marina, consolidating Portimão Marina® as one of the most prestigious and sustainable in the country.
