Mário Laginha, João Barradas and Diogo Alexandre among the best in jazz by JazzLogical

In line with the contributions of 16 critics, programmers, festival directors, and researchers, ‘Atlântico‘, by Mário Laginha in the trio, with saxophonist Julian Arguelles and drummer Helge Norbakken, was elected the best album of 2020.

“Atlântico”, recorded in 2019 and released last November, is the second album of this trio – LAN Trio -, with the title to refer to the geographic field common to the three musicians, between Portugal (Mário Laginha), United Kingdom (Julian Arguelles ) and Norway (Helge Norbakken).

Accordionist João Barradas was elected the musician of the year, due to the album ‘Portrait‘, and drummer Diogo Alexandre is considered the revelation of 2020. JazzLogical‘s guest critics also considered drummer Marcos Cavaleiro the ‘sideman’ of the year.

Manuel Jorge Veloso, a jazz musician and promoter, who died at the end of 2019, is also remembered with the “national tribune of honor”.

At the international level, the choices of 2020 fell on the American saxophonist Charles Lloyd, who receives the recognition of ‘Album of the year’ by the disc ‘8: Kindred Spirits – Live From The Lobero’.

The North American vibraphonist Joel Ross was elected the musician of the year and the North American saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins the revelation musician.
