Fado singer Mariza, the band Resistência and the artist Paulo Gonzo are some of the heads of this year’s edition of the Semana do Mar, which started today in the city of Horta in the Azores.

The initiative, organized by the Municipal Council of Horta, is already in its 43rd edition and was one of the first summer festivals that arose in the Azores, but for the mayor of the municipality, José Leonardo Silva, the party is above all a ” meeting point “for both locals and tourists visiting the island at this time of year.

The Semana do Mar (Sea Week) will run between today and August 12 and will also feature the presence of artists Calema and Fernando Daniel, and an international folklore festival, with the participation of groups from Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Russia.

The festivities unfold between Avenida 25 de Abril, the Marina da Horta and Largo do Infante, where they are set up the stages of the party, the Gastronomic Fair, the Expo-mar (one made of nautical activity) and the small restaurants and you drink.

In addition to the musical performances on land, the Semana do Mar is known mainly for its nautical spectacle, considered one of the largest in the country, with the presence of hundreds of athletes who travel to Faial to participate in dozens of events, sailing, canoeing and swimming.

The Semana do Mar began in the 1970s, when a reception party was organized on the island for participants in an international regatta, linking the port of Portsmouth in England to the island of Faial.

The festivities organized at that time had the involvement of the population, the municipality and the Horta Naval Club, which decided to keep the initiative in the following years, in such a way that it became the largest party on the island and one of the largest in the Azores.
