Iberian Mask on the streets of Lisbon, music in the gardens, and short films in the laundry
The Festas na Rua bring this weekend to Lisbon the ancestral popular traditions of the Iberian Peninsula. Typical masks from the villages of the north and central parts of the country, as well as from various Spanish provinces linked to ancient festive rituals associated with the winter solstice, fertility, and Celtic cults.
It is the return to the city of the International Iberian Mask Parade, after the pandemic. In this 16th edition, there are more than 450 participants, including a guest group that brings from Italy the famous Venetian masks, which will animate the city’s streets to the sound of Pauliteiros and Asturian Bagpipes. On Saturday (the 21st), at 16:30, the parade begins and ends at Terreiro do Paço, thus celebrating the ritual of the mask – which in the past marked the passage of young people to adulthood – and recovering the magic of mystical times. An initiative supported by the Lisbon Tourism Association.
Music fills two late afternoons, with different rhythms.
Already this Thursday (the 19th), at 19:00, pianist João Paulo Esteves da Silva joins the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra. A concert in the Garden of Quinta da Paz (in Lumiar) to listen to Bela Senão Sem – released in 2013 and re-released in 2020 with new arrangements and new compositions.
On Sunday, starting at 18:00, the Bandstand in the Jardim do Campo das Amoreiras (in the parish of Santa Clara) serves as the stage for the performance of the Musical and Artistic Band of Charneca with a repertoire of traditional, popular, and classical music.
We return to set up a screen in the public laundry tanks, this time at the Lavadouro do Lumiar for the outdoor screening of short films. Between the Queer universe and the 50th anniversary of the April 25th revolution, the sessions of Cinema no Estendal are scheduled for the 20th and 21st, starting at 21:00.
