Black History Month celebrated at Parque Mayer
Parque Mayer, in Lisbon, will host the annual celebration of “Black History Month”. The event will be marked with a gala honoring prominent figures from the Afro-Portuguese community and with performances by Selma Uamusse and Tito Paris at the Capitólio, on February 19, at 6:30 pm.
The initiative is promoted by the Canadian Embassy in Portugal, the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) and the Lisbon City Council, in partnership with Lisboa Cultura. Entry is free, subject to room capacity.
The tribute aims to praise the lives and contributions of Georgina Ribas, Johnson Semedo (posthumous tributes), Naide Gomes and Tito Paris, four Afro-descendant personalities of recognized merit.
The event’s celebration features musical performances by Selma Uamusse and Tito Paris and the unveiling of four portraits of the honoured personalities, created by the Nigerian-born artist based in Canada, Brian Amadi.
Celebrated for the second time in Portugal, “Black History Month” is an annual celebration that originated in the United States of America and Canada – more recently also celebrated in Ireland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Colombia – which began as a way to remember important figures and events in the history of the African diaspora. In Portugal, for its organization and promotion, a Monitoring Committee was set up, made up of influential figures from the Afro-Portuguese community, as well as representatives from the Canadian Embassy, AIMA and Lisbon City Council.
Entry to the event is free and subject to room capacity. Tickets will be available for collection from 2 pm on the day of the event, February 19, at the Teatro Variedades box office, in Parque Mayer.
