Miguel Candeias winner of the 12th Setúbal Fado Contest

The 24-year-old singer convinced the audience with the interpretation of the theme “Apelo (Fado Perseguição)”, by António Zambujo, snatching 778 votes, which corresponds to about a third of a universe of 2589 voters.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Setúbal Fado Contest, which disseminates and projects new musical talents from all over the country, usually takes place in the city’s headquarters, but this year, due to the pandemic, the format was changed. In this 12th edition, the contest organized by the City Council, in collaboration with Sociedade Musical Capricho Setubalense and União das Freguesias de Setúbal, did not have any face-to-face events, and the contestants performed in video recorded performances, starting from from Capricho.

The election of the winner was made, with equal weight, between the online voting of the public and the jury, constituted by the fado singers Deolinda de Jesus and Inês Duarte and by the technician of the Culture Division of the municipality Nuno Batalha.

Miguel Candeias, in addition to receiving a cash prize of 400 euros, won the opportunity to perform in a concert to be held in Setúbal, with a date and place yet to be defined.

Joana Camões, with the theme “Maldição”, Sara Ferreira, with “Rosa Caída”, Carolina Gomes, with “Poeira, que Vai ao Vento”, Mafalda Vasques, with “Saudade, Silêncio e Sombra”, Carolina Mendes, with “Meu Amor Marinheiro”, Bruna Duarte, with the theme “Saudades do Brasil em Portugal”, Ândria Nunes, with “Chuva”, and Amabélio Pereira, with “Noite”, complete the list of finalist fadistas of the XII Setúbal Fado Contest.

The Setúbal Fado Contest, which disseminates and projects new musical talents from all over the country, featured, in this 12th edition, with singers from Setúbal, Lisbon, Coimbra, Torres Vedras, Póvoa de Santa Iria, São Brás de Alportel and Torres Vedras.
