Mimo Festival returns to Amarante

July 19th, 20th and 21st

From the 19th to the 21st of July, in Amarante, world culture and music will once again be celebrated, with an inclusive, diverse and bold program – completely free, as has been MIMO’s trademark for 20 years.

MIMO, considered one of the biggest free music festivals in Brazil, takes place again in Portugal, with the Municipality of Amarante as the main promoter.

Thus, another MIMO Amarante of unique sounds, aesthetics and textures is anticipated, in which music occupies not only the stages but the entire city, with concerts and parallel activities such as lectures, workshops, exhibitions, performances, cinema and guided tours. A free world of art and culture is anticipated for another unforgettable edition for the public, which in 2019 brought together more than 80 thousand people over the weekend.

This auspicious return to Amarante has been long awaited, as it is the city that hosted the Portuguese editions of the festival between 2016 and 2019, which was born in Olinda, Brazil. It has 20 years of history, with 60 editions, and performances in more than 12 cities in Brazil and Europe, watched by an audience of more than 2 million people eager to hear or discover the best of national and world music.

According to Lu Araújo, the director and founder of the MIMO Festival, “It is always with great emotion that we see thousands of people experiencing art in such an intense and diverse way. MIMO is positive, inclusive and democratic, it is part of Amarante and the people of Amarante, but also of the thousands of national and foreign fans who visit us annually”.

Always free entry, this is the MIMO Festival.

ABOUT MARCELO D2

Man with a box on head Auto-generated description with medium confidence

From Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo D2 begins his European tour, now with the praised album “IBORU”, at MIMO Amarante. A prodigious album that has the artistic ambition of creating a “Revolution in rap, revolution in rock, revolution in samba!” but also the political will for change and combating Bolsonarism. It is his 9th original work.

The artist, one of the most respected names on the Brazilian pop scene, continues

faithful to himself, exploring new sonic possibilities and consolidating musical experiences. After three decades of a fruitful career marked by the search for innovation, the artist turns to his history, mixing, for the first time, the bass of the 808 with the cadence and classic formation of samba in the terreiro. In this “new traditional samba” by

Marcelo D2, cavaquinho, choir, percussion and brass dialogue harmoniously with the hip-hop samples and beats.

The album also features compositions by names from different generations of Brazilian samba, including Moacyr Luz, Diogo Nogueira, Zeca Pagodinho and Xande de Pilares. The joint work with historian and writer Luiz Antonio Simas, on two songs, highlights D2’s quest to deepen his roots in Brazilian popular culture.

Marcelo D2’s passion for art is not limited to music. He also demonstrates a keen eye and unique sensitivity to cinema. His most recent foray into the world of cinema accompanied the release of “IBORU” in 2023. The film, also scripted and directed by him, not only complements the album but presents a unique vision of how the roots of samba, from 3 founding characters of the genre remain contemporary 100 years later.
