São Vicente’s Mindelense hosts the weekend of Académica da Praia, on the second round of the Cape Verde championship, in a reprint of last year’s final, won by the students of the Cape Verdean capital.
After tying for the opening day, the two teams are looking for the first win, in what is the ‘big’ game of the second round of the championship.
The meeting will be the re-edition of last year’s final, held at the Porto Novo Stadium in Santo Antão, where Académica da Praia beat Mindelense 2-0, winning the Cape Verde Cup for the second time in its history, and first after the country’s independence in 1975.
In the other group game, Académica do Fogo, coached by Portugal’s Joel de Castro, will receive their namesake from Porto Novo, in a clash between two teams with aspirations to reach the semi-finals and also looking for their first win in the competition.
In Group B, Ultramarina de São Nicolau, who lost on Matchday 1, will host Académica 83 de Maio, a formation that started the race with a win.
In the other game, the Santo Crucifixo, from Santo Antão Norte, who made his national debut with a victory over Ultramarina, will travel to Brava Island to face local Sporting, a team that lost in the opening round of the biggest archipelago.
Oásis Atlântico, trained by former Cape Verdean side Lúcio Antunes and the only team to win in Group C, will host Celtic da Praia, the champion of South Santiago, who made his debut with a 0-0 draw against the Varandinha de Santiago North.
On the second round, Varandinha will play at home against Boavista’s Eleven Stars, a formation that was lost at home in the opening round.
