MirAnda presents new album Uma Mulher na Cidade
May 18th at B.Leza
Some returns are considered new, almost like debuts. But they mean more when we realize that the public absence was, after all, a period of research, of work, of aggrandizement. If MirAnda was already the most disturbing and seductive member of OqueStrada, in “A Woman in the City” we will discover her taking full control of what is happening. And that’s no small feat…”
João Gobern
Marta Miranda, born in Lisbon, but raised between Alentejo and Algarve, is a multifaceted artist, residing in Almada, but also with her eyes on the other bank, Lisbon, where she walks whenever she crosses the Tagus River.
His artistic career began at the Escola Profissional de Artes e Ofícios do Espetáculo, known as Chapitô, and flourished as the lead singer of the band OqueStrada from 2002 onwards.
OqueStrada, under his musical direction, created a unique style called “FadoBeat”, which mixes influences from Portuguese fado, Afro-Brazilian beats and hip-hop. The band’s success led them to play at festivals and prestigious venues throughout Europe, culminating in the invitation, the only one to date for a Portuguese band, to perform at the Nobel Peace Prize gala/concert in Oslo, in 2012.
In addition to her musical career, Marta Miranda stood out as an artistic director through the creation of several shows such as Fadiagem and projects such as A Incrível Tasca Móvel, which represented Lisbon at LA MERCÈ 2018 in Barcelona. Her cultural contribution also included running Tasca Beat do Rosário, an iconic venue in Lisbon that promoted art, music and conviviality.
After the success with OqueStrada, Marta Miranda embarks on a solo path as MirAnda. Her debut album, Uma Mulher na Cidade, which is an allusion to Carlos do Carmo’s 1977 album Um Homem na Cidade, reflects the musical and cultural diversity of a cosmopolitan Lisbon, exploring influences ranging from fado to funaná, passing through desert blues and Argentine cumbia. The album features the collaboration of talented artists from all over the world, united by their passion for the city and what MirAnda calls “The Lovers of Lisbon”, thus referring to the 1955 film Os Lovers of the Tagus, with Amália Rodrigues as the protagonist.
The album Uma Mulher na Cidade, released by German publisher Jaro Medien, reached prominence on the Transglobal World Music Chart and was considered by the German Record Critics’ Award Association as the best World Music album in the last quarter of 2023.
The selection of this album’s repertoire is divided between fado and original compositions, with a total of 10 songs. In fado, MirAnda highlighted the composers and the diversity of styles, such as Alain Oulman and Artur Ribeiro, who represent two distinct aesthetics and lineages within this musical genre. Producing the album is Alê Siqueira, multi-awarded with 3 Grammys and producer of artists such as Caetano Veloso, Os Tribalistas or Elza Soares.
The official launch of the album, scheduled for May 18th at B.Leza, will be a meeting of Lisbon’s cultural and musical diversity with the presence of MirAnda (voice), Simone Carugatti (Guitar and Ukulele), Ganso (programming) and several others guest musicians who contributed to the album.
“Conto Contigo” is the first single, released with a music video filmed on the streets of the city where MirAnda meets the people and sounds that inspire her. In this case, the composition, song lyrics and inspiration are by Joana D’ Água. It is one of those themes that express well what João Gobern says about the album: “Making Lisbon the nerve centre and magnetic centre, it even goes around the world, guiding us along unexpected and unsuspected paths, but which end up representing the reflections of will to personalize and transform so many schools and so many musical forms.”
