Winners of the 1st Carlos do Carmo Award (SPA) present a reinterpretation of fado and Amália Rodrigues’ repertoire based on voice, piano and synthesizers, widely praised by international critics
November 22 – Teatro Maria Matos, Lisbon
Lina and Raül Refree, two amazing musicians who created an intense and deep musical relationship. Fado is reinvented and re-orchestrated halfway through by an exceptional fado singer and by Catalan Raül Refree, currently one of the best producers in Spain.
Raül Refree discovered Lina’s voice at Clube de Fado and from there to the studio was a step. Surrounded by vintage synthesizers, from Moogs and Arps, from Oberheims and Rolands, but also with the piano very close, Raül framed Lina’s voice in analogue fog, leaving fado guitars in our imagination, but retaining all the strength of a throat really loaded.
Lina rose to the challenge. An attentive student of Amália’s work, she chose a series of pearls from the Diva’s repertoire in order to use them as a basis for communication. As if this project was born from a search for awe, for the essence.
In themes such as “Barco Negro” or “Foi Deus”, “Ave Maria Fadista”, “Medo” or “Gaivota”, either a greater monument of fado memory, Lina shows herself as a complete, true and talented artist. able to haunt us all. Her interpretations are mostly human, emotional, preferring to rip the words from the heart rather than mold them with the technique she also studied.
This delivery offers another light to fado in the arrangements that Raül Refree prepared for it. Without tricks or filters, but with art and with an approach never tried before, dressing fado with an unprecedented electronic clothing that, instead of distorting it, only reinforces its universal condition.
The Lina_Raül Refree album was distinguished in 2021 with the Carlos do Carmo Award, created by SPA this year as a tribute to the performer.
