Monte da Bica invests €1.5M to create a hotel, two wine presses and a tasting room
Boutique winery wants to invest in exports and presents new wines

“Our wines are completely out of the box. We are undoubtedly a brand for a niche market that values irreverence, authenticity and, above all, exclusivity. Through our wines, we can showcase another Alentejo. An Alentejo where silence has a soul”, highlights Manuela Pinto Gouveia.
Monte da Bica, a boutique winery located in the heart of Alentejo, in the Montemor-o-Novo area, begins a new chapter in its history that dates back more than 100 years. Under the leadership of Manuela Pinto Gouveia, whose mission is to elevate Monte da Bica to a benchmark for success and sustainability — both in terms of forestry, agriculture and tourism — the estate is preparing to invest more than 1.5 million euros in the construction of a Boutique Hotel, new wine presses and a tasting room.
“We are beginning a new phase of this project with a Portuguese soul and so deeply Alentejo: Monte da Bica. We have a new website with an online store, a new image and new wine references — irreverent and bold as always — that continue to challenge conventions and elevate the perception of the region’s wines”, says Manuela Pinto Gouveia, owner of Monte da Bica. “We also have a new wine cellar, a wine gallery with regular exhibitions and new experiences for those who visit us. This year we will open two foot-treading presses – we want to do all the winemaking in-house – and a tasting room. In 2027, we will make a long-held dream of my parents come true: the hotel. We want to restore the hospitality of our family home, create an immersive experience and help retain people and talent in the region by creating job opportunities”, he adds.
Since 1919, the Pinto Gouveia family has been proud to own this estate, known for its long tradition in the production of cork and cereals. With around 350 hectares of land, Monte da Bica is today a model of sustainable and diversified management, operating in areas such as cork, pine nuts, eucalyptus, honey, seeds and livestock. Since 2016, the brand has also been dedicated to wine production, combining tradition and innovation, with the first vineyard being planted in 2005.

The brand is still taking its first steps towards internationalisation, with plans to begin exporting to markets such as Angola, Ireland, Brazil, Canada and Spain in 2025. The growth strategy also includes opening new distribution channels and forming new business partnerships.
“My appreciation for wine was passed on to me by my father, who left me a family vineyard dedicated to the production of premium wines, produced in small quantities. I also inherited the enthusiasm with which each bottle is produced here, the attention to detail, the deep affection for the land and the commitment to excellence”, she adds.
The Monte da Bica wine range
Authentic and aromatic, Monte da Bica wines aspire to remain in the memory of true connoisseurs. Located in Lavre, a region of stunning landscapes and a generous climate, the Monte da Bica vineyards benefit from ideal conditions to produce wines of great freshness and aromatic expression. This unique terroir, characterised by the transitional soils from clay to sand in this extreme part of the Alentejo, allows for exceptional maturation, giving the wines a unique personality.
The production of Monte da Bica wines is in the experienced hands of two winemakers: André Herrera, consultant winemaker, and Madalena Torres Pereira, resident winemaker. André arrived at Monte da Bica in the spring of 2016 and brought a new dimension to the house’s wines. Elegance, freshness and character quickly became words associated with the brand, gaining widespread public recognition. From the most traditional blends to bold single-vineyard selections, André found in Lavre a unique terroir that allowed him to explore new expressions of authenticity.
The line currently consists of 10 wines: Da Bica Rosé 2024, Monte da Bica Rosé 2018, Da Bica Red 2021, Monte da Bica Reserva 2019, Castelão Reserva 2021, Merlot Reserva 2020, Untitled White, Untitled Rosé, APG Grande Reserva 2020, and Merlot Grande Reserva 2019. Among the new releases are Da Bica Red 2021, Da Bica Rosé 2024, and Untitled Rosé. The launch of TPG Grande Reserva, a tribute to the family matriarch, is also planned.
With a new wine cellar and a wine gallery in the barrel room that hosts regular art exhibitions, Monte da Bica aims to establish itself not only as a wine producer, but also as a must-see destination in Alentejo, promoting the culture, terroir and unique identity of the region. In addition, it offers a variety of immersive experiences, such as wine tasting, visits to the estate, picnics, cork extraction and wine pressing, allowing visitors to connect with the land and local biodiversity.
The Guatemalan crafts store, Manymaya
And because Monte da Bica is made of passion, the Manumaya showroom also stands out, with artisanal pieces from Guatemala, selected by Manuela herself. This project — already well-known in Comporta — now gains new expression in Alentejo, in a space where the wine store merges with art and culture from another world. The two universes share the same values: authenticity, tradition, sustainability and commitment to beauty.
