More than 500 jazz musicians meet in Lisbon and there are free concerts

More than 500 jazz professionals will meet in Lisbon as part of the European Jazz Conference, which will be held for the first time in the city and will include concerts open to the public.

Among musicians, promoters, agents, programmers, heads of major jazz festivals and publishers, participants will be more than 500 – “a record of entries” – in what is, according to the organization, the “busiest edition ever” .

The professionals will meet between Thursday and Saturday at the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB), “to exchange knowledge and experience in an unprecedented summit.”

In January, when he announced the event, programmer and saxophonist Carlos Martins explained that this meeting in Lisbon could help the internationalization of Portuguese jazz.

“In the case of Portuguese jazz, it is necessary to break the geographical wall and promote it outside of Portugal, because the country does not have a dimension to the extraordinary quality of Portuguese jazz, it has to expand and have an organized strategy,” he said.

The program runs from morning to evening and includes lectures by the Portuguese singer Maria João, who will talk about the course in jazz, and the Frenchman François Pachet, director of the research area of ??the music platform Spotify, and several ‘showcases’ of Portuguese music: Impermanence, Bode Wilson Trio, Axes, Pedro Melo Alves’ Omniae Ensemble, Beatriz Nunes Quartet and TGB.

Taking advantage of the celebration of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, participants will be invited to visit a cultural space or museum in the area of ??Belém. The visit will be made by a narrator or a jazz musician, who will work there.

Also during the conference, the association Europe Jazz Network will hold a general assembly, will have discussion groups on topics such as education through jazz, social inclusion and gender equality. Prizes will also be awarded among the associate members – festivals, promoters, producers – and presented a book on the history of European jazz.

In addition, there will be several concerts open to the public, “which aim to show the best jazz that is currently done in Europe.”

The CCB’s Grand Auditorium will host a performance by the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra on Thursday with the special participation of Maria João, pianist João Paulo Esteves da Silva, accordionist João Barradas and saxophonist João Mortágua.

On Friday, Norwegian trio Espen Eriksen and British saxophonist Andy Sheppard will perform on the stage and on Saturday will play the New Conception of Jazz project by Norwegian pianist and composer Bugge Wesseltoft.

The conference is organized by the Europe Jazz Network, in partnership with the Sons da Lusofonia association and the CCB.

Last year, the European Jazz Conference took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
